When shopping for your dream home, it is also important to try and buy one in your dream location.
Start out by reading What Do You Want to Live Nearby, and What Should You Avoid? Part 1. In that post, we talked about what it is good to have close to your home. This post will focus on what you do not want to have too close to your new home.
What it is Bad to Live Nearby?
- Busy streets. Although it can be useful to have relatively easy access to main streets or highways, you do not necessarily want to be too close to one. Having to listen to the roar of highway traffic day and night can get to be fatiguing.
- Other noisy forms of mass transit. Similarly, it can be handy to be close to a bus station or metro station. But living right next door to noisy train tracks or an airport can really disrupt your day-to-day life.
- Pollution. The air quality and water quality you are exposed to can have a major impact on your physical health, and even your emotional wellbeing. Research to make sure that you will have access to clean water and air that are free of pollution. This is especially important if the home is close to an industrial zone, military base, etc.
- Bad neighbors. When you are touring houses, try to check out the surrounding homes a bit. What can you figure out about the neighbors? If they seem to be especially loud, messy, nosey, or otherwise problematic, you may be better off moving somewhere else.
- Crime. Speaking of dodgy neighbors, look up the crime rates for the neighborhood where you may buy a home. Try and move to a neighborhood where they are low.
